Reconstruction Era

From collection Lick-Wilmerding High School Timeline List (Timeline #1)

The Reconstruction Era follows the Civil War, as federal troops occupy the South to encourage renewal after the destruction of war. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments are also ratified during this time, intending to protect the rights of formerly enslaved Americans. It is a time of prosperity, with many Black Americans gaining an education and being elected to office. This prosperity is cut short when federal troops leave the South, ending protection for many Americans.
